Visit of delegation under the leadership of Sri. Singi Niranjana Reddy, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture and Allied Sectors, Telangana State along with Horticulture Commissioner and Vice Chancellor of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticul

Sri. Singi Niranjana Reddy, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture and Allied Sectors, Telangana visited ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru on 28.01.2021 mainly to study the various technologies of ICAR-IIHR to develop strategies to increase the productivity and utilization of tropical and sub-tropical horticulture crops in Telangana State.

At the outset, the Incharge, PME, ICAR-IIHR extended a warm welcome to the delegation and discussion was started.

The Director, ICAR-IIHR briefed the delegates about ICAR-IIHR since its inception, the technologies / varieties developed and the impact of the technology to the National Economy and also he emphasized on the importance of various technologies which have brought changes in the economy of the farmers.

Dr. H.C. Prasanna, Nodal Officer, ITMU made a brief presentation about the ICAR-IIHR technologies which are available for commercialization.

The Director of Horticulture, Government of Telangana, Sri L. Venkatram Reddy presented the status of Horticulture in the State of Telangana and raised the following actions which are very much essential for Horticulture Sector in the State.

  1. 70% of mango orchards in Telangana State are more than 25 years of age whose canopy are old, overcrowded, dense and this requires rejuvenation of the orchards.
  2. Alternative bearing, wider spacing, lack of hybrids are major problems in mango orchards.
  3. Manipulation of mango flowering for earliness and promotion of high density planting is required.
  4. No hybrid has been replaced with the existing varieties and hence requested for a suitable hybrid for Telangana State.
  5. Alternate variety to totapuri mango may be suggested for pulp making and processing.
  6. Chilli is an important crop in Telangana State and the hybrids varieties which are grown belong to Teja Sector and requested for testing IIHR F1 hybrids for red chillies in Telangana State through Horticulture Department.
  7. Chilli leaf curl, powdery mildew and wilt diseases are the major problems and which needs to be addressed.
  8. Oleoresin extraction and capsaicin rich chilli varieties / hybrids are required for Telangana State.
  9. Poly house management, crop planning, measures for reducing minimum temperatures may be suggested.
  10. Nematode control in poly houses.
  11. Cultivation of cucurbits in poly houses.

The Scientists and the Heads of the Division of ICAR-IIHR replied to the points raised by the Director of Horticulture, Government of Telangana and gave solutions for various aspects to manage the orchards in mango.  Alternate varieties like Arka Suprabhath may be made as a replacement for the existing varieties of Mango to Telangana State. 

            Dr. K. Madhavi Reddy, I/c, Division of Vegetable Crops suggested various chilli hybrids resistant to LCV to be demonstrated in Telangana State.  Further, she also mentioned that the hybrids of bhut jolokia, which are highly pungent are being developed which can be tested in Telangana State through Department of Horticulture. 

Further, the varieties which are rich in deoresin can also be tried. For polyhouse cultivation, crops like English cucumber, ridge gourd and cherry tomato have been suggested.

            The Hon’ble Minister in his remarks emphasized the need for making Telangana State as a Seed Production hub.  He appreciated the interaction between ICAR-IIHR scientists and the delegates.  He also mentioned that the agro climatic conditions of both the states remain the same.  Thus, exchange of knowledge for both the states is very much essential. He also mentioned that the farmers have to become dedicated to become self reliant.  He also emphasized on the technologies to be made available to the farming community and the youth to be technologically equipped.  He also emphasized the need for the quality seed available for potato through cluster approach. He stressed the need for making horticulture an enterprise.

            Finally, he appreciated ICAR-IIHR for having developed so many technologies and varieties which are eco-friendly and are useful to farming community.

            The delegation visited Fruit and Vegetable Vending Van, Arka Tricycle, Mushroom Laboratory; breeder seed unit, polyhouses, NHF demonstration plots and seed vending machine.

            The Hon’ble Minister has handed over a cheque of Rs.5.00 lakh towards NHF-2021 to the Director, ICAR-IIHR.
