Training cum demonstration on composting and gardening at HSR layout, Bengaluru

Training cum demonstration on composting and gardening was conducted at Swacha Graha Kalika Kendra, HSR layout, Bengaluru on 27th March, 2022 in collaboration with SWMRT, Bengaluru. This programme was mainly organized to popularize and to create mass awareness among general public about gardening and to convert kitchen waste into compost. In the beginning of the programme, Mr. B N S Ratnakar, Managing Committee member, HSR citizen forum has briefed about the training cum demonstration programme and the importance of composting and gardening to the participants. Dr M.V. Dhananjaya, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IIHR explained about the ICAR-IIHR technologies suitable for gardening and composting. Dr. D. Kalaivanan, Scientist from the Division of Natural Resources, ICAR-IIHR has highlighted the importance and need of having garden on rooftop/terrace//utility area/front yard/ back yard depending upon the space available. He has further informed that the ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru has standardized a complete production technology including nutrient formulations for soilless cultivation of most commonly consumed vegetables viz., tomato, chilli, cabbage, cucumber, French bean, garden peas, ridge gourd and leafy vegetables and few exotic vegetables like zucchini and colour cabbage. Later, he has demonstrated the containerized soilless production of vegetables using Arka Fermented Cocopeat and IIHR standardized nutrient solution ‘Arka Sasya Poshak Ras’. He has mentioned that using this technology urban and peri-urban people can grow their choice of vegetables to meet their daily vegetable requirement. More than 50 enthusiastic citizens were participated and benefited in the training cum demonstration. The program was also broadcasted live on Instagram. During the demonstration, participants were interacted and cleared their queries about gardening, composting and ICAR-IIHR technologies.
