Ultra drying as a cost effective technique to extend seed longevity of horticultural germplasm under ambient conditions (crops- Papaya, Onion, China aster)

  • To find out the effect of ultra drying of seeds on longevity of different crop species under ambient conditions.
  • To find out the physiological and biochemical changes in ultra dried seeds.

Achievements: 

 

  • Both ultra dried and normally dried seeds of both onion varieties viz., Arka Kalyan and Arka Nikethan  maintained original germination (>90%) even after 2 years irrespective of storage temperatures. However, seeds with normal moisture showed little decline in seed germination and vigour when compared to ultradried seeds under ambient temperature.
  • Papaya seeds of cv. Arka Prabhath  with 8% moisture content & stored at ambient condition  showed slow rate of germination compared to ultra dried seed but the final germination was on par with seeds with ultra low moisture (4%) after 24 months of storage. The ultra dried seeds showed germination of  99% under ambient conditions.
  • Papaya seeds of cv. Solo with 7% moisture content & stored at ambient conditions showed slow rate of germination but the final germination was higher (86%) than ultra dried seeds (63%) after 24 months of storage but ultra dried seeds had significant percent (31%) of fresh un germinated seeds which were viable but not germinated at the end of test period.
  • Papaya seeds of cv. Arka Surya with 7% moisture content though showed lower first count (57%) and final germination (83%) than the seeds with 4% moisture content ( 93 and 96 %, respectively) after 18 months of storage under ambient conditions.
  • China aster seeds stored in ambient conditions showed significant reduction in germination whereas seeds at 150C maintained original germination irrespective of moisture content.  However, the reduction in germination was numerically  more in normal seed than ultra dried seed under ambient conditions with germination of  73% and 76%, respectively.
  • There was no change in seed protein and enzyme profile  of ultra dried seed even after 24 months of storage under ambient conditions in onion
