Training on Sustainable Fruit-based Production System organized by CHES (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar

CHES (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar organised a training programme about Sustainable Fruit-based Production System, on 20 January, 2023 at Pathara, Nayagarh, Odisha, with the aim to highlight the significance of crop diversification, intercropping, organic inputs, and apiary in sustaining Fruit-based Production System. The training was conducted at the model farm of Sh. Suresh Chandra Hota who has developed a demonstrable Fruit-based sustainable model under the technical guidance of CHES (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar and with the support of the Horticulture Department.

The training program was graced by Padma Shri Mrs. Sabarmati who highlighted the significance of organic farming and germplasm conservation in horticulture. State Horticulture officers, KVK scientists, apiculture expert, and more than 50 fruit growers of Nayagarh and Ganjam districts participated in the training program. The significance of crop diversification including high-value fruit crops like dragon fruit, scope of intercropping and integration of apiculture and organic component for sustainability in the production system were highlighted by Dr. Kundan Kishore, whereas Dr. Deepa Samant emphasized the need for canopy regulation and nutrient management in the fruit production system. Sh. Ajit Kumar Nayak, AHO, Nayagarh highlighted farmer-oriented schemes of the Horticulture Deptt. and encouraged the farmers to equip their farms with drip, mulching material and farm  tools  by  availing  government  schemes.  Sh.  Alok  Kumar  Pradhan  demonstrated

important aspects of beekeeping and emphasized the need for bee hives in the horticulture farm for effective pollination and as well as for honey production. Scientists from KVK, Nayagarh also expressed their views on effective management of soil health for yield sustainability.

Sh. Suresh Chandra Hota demonstrated his fruit-based production system model to the participants and encouraged them to adopt crop diversification and intercropping of papaya and vegetables in the initial stage of dragon fruit, mango and guava cultivation, He also demonstrated the benefits of organic farming with the use of organic components (vermicompost) and apiculture. Participants expressed satisfaction over the training program and expressed their willingness to adopt crop diversification and integration of various components in  fruit cultivation. The program was also covered by local media wherein farmers were encouraged to  adopt sustainable fruit-based model of Sh. Hota. Dr. Kundan Kishore and Deepa Samant coordinated the program assisted by project assistant.
