In several crops, post-zygotic incompatibility barriers exist in controlled crosses owing to various reasons and the embryo fails to develop to term. However, the immature zygotic embryo can be rescued from abortion by excising it out and culturing it on synthetic media. Thus, through application of in vitro breeding methodology, a cross can be made successful.It is a very useful tool in the armoury of breeding where conventional hybridization techniques fail.
