One Day Seminar on Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) conducted at KVK Kodagu
As part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru, a one day Seminar on Farmer Producer organisation was conducted at KVK Kodagu on 19th Oct,2016, in collaboration with NABARD. About 100 farmers, officials from ATMA, Department of Agriculture, members of other FPOs from Kodagu district participated in the Seminar.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. M.R. Dinesh, Director IIHR, Bangalore by lighting the lamp along with other dignitaries. Speaking on the occasion he said that FPO is a good concept for the farmers to join together and it brings economies of scale, thus resulting in the minimisation of input prices required for farming activities and providing good avenues for marketing of produce. Dr. I.N. Doreyappa Gowda, Head, CHES, Chettali and Dr. C. Aswath, P.S and Head, Division of Ornamental crops were also present during the occasion. Shri Veerendra Kumar welcomed all the dignitaries and explained about the purpose of the organisation of the programme. The programme was compered by Shri B. Prabhakar of KVK. Dr. Saju George, Head, KVK, Kodagu talked about the role of KVKs in FPOs.
In the technical session, Shri M.C. Nanaiah, District Development Manager, NABARD, gave a detailed presentation on the concept of FPO through powerpoint presentation. Shri Shivarudrappa, a member representing an FPO explained about the working of FPO in Chamrajanagar district. Dr. Pennobaliswamy, Professor and SAMETI coordinator, UAS, Bengaluru, also spoke on the occasion and presented the videos of some successful farmer organisations from Maharashtra and how they have succeeded in exporting their produce directly to the international market.
The CEO of Braghandeshwara FPO from Bhagamandala of Madikkeri taluk, spoke about the business plan of the newly formed FPO with more than 1000 farmers. There were also participants from Sowmwarpet FPO, who also spoke about the business plan for their new FPO. In the concluding session of the Seminar, many of the farmers expressed their interest in forming an FPO in Virajpet taluk, initially concentrating on Pepper.
