Hon'ble Governor of Karnataka Inaugurated the International Symposium on Horticulture: Priorities & Emerging Trends at the Golden Jubilee year celebration of IIHR, Bengaluru

His Excellency Shri Vajubhai Rudabahi Valaji, Hon'ble Governor of Karnataka inaugurated the "International Symposium on Horticulture: Priorities & Emerging Trends" on September 4, 2017, at the occasion of celebration of Golden Jubilee of Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bengaluru at the J. N. Tata Auditorium, National Science Seminar Complex, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Shri Ananth Kumar, Hon'ble Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of India graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. This symposium is jointly organized by IIHR, ICAR, Society for Promotion of Horticulture (SPH) and International Society for Horticultural Sciences, Belgium. Various publications in digital form and jackfruit were released by dignitaries.

Dr. M. R. Dinesh, Director, ICAR-IIHR extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries, delegates and the participants. In his welcome speech, he mentioned about the special programmes organized by ICAR-IIHR for addressing the issues of horticulture and farmers’ problems in cultivation of horticultural crops. He also mentioned the vital contribution made by retired scientists and about the start-ups that the Institute has promoted in recent times.

Dr. A. K. Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticultural Sciences), ICAR, New Delhi, spoke about the purpose of the International Symposium. He proudly mentioned that the horticultural production of the country has touched 300 million tonnes from an area of 25 million ha. He also committed that institute will strive to fulfill the vision of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, to double the income of farmers by 2022. He also said that the Institute has played a stellar role in promoting horticulture in India and appreciated the Institute in promoting the advanced technologies in the field of horticulture.

Shri Ananth Kumar heartily appreciated the achievements of the Institute in supporting the horticulturists through developing and disseminating farmer-friendly technologies. He urged the scientists to help the farmers not only to produce more but also to produce quality and marketable produce. He exhibited his kind gesture by stating that he will be the ambassador of the Institute and extend his full support to fulfill old demands, including the "Deemed–to–be-University" status of the Institute.

His Excellency Shri Vajubhai Rudabahi Valaji, in his Presidential Address mentioned that agriculture will support the livelihood of 65 per cent of the rural population. He called upon the scientists to help the farmers in doubling their production. He urged the policy-makers to take initiatives for providing minimum support price for horticultural commodities.

The program is ended with vote of thanks by Dr. C. Aswath, Principal Scientist, ICAR-IIHR & General Secretary SPH.

More than 700 national and international researchers, policy-makers, representatives of various R&D organizations, farmers and staff of ICAR-IIHR participated in the inaugural programme.
