Hon’ble Secretary, DARE and DG, ICAR Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra inaugurated the Regional Horticultural Fair 2017 of ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru on 15-01-2017
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Hon’ble Secretary, DARE and Director General (DG), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) inaugurated the Regional Horticultural Fare (RHF) 2017 on 15.1.2017 at ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru.
ICAR-IIHR is playing a pivotal role in boosting horticultural growth in the country, not only through technology development of varieties of fruits, vegetables, ornamental, medicinal and aromatic crops, mushrooms, soil and plant health management, post-harvest management and value addition and farm mechanization, but also dissemination of such technologies to the stakeholders, mainly the farmers. This Regional Horticultural Fair (RHF) 2017 is one such significant event, which envisages knowledge sharing process on innovative horticultural technologies developed under National Agricultural Research and Education System (NARES) to the stakeholders of, mainly southern states such as Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Puducherry and also other states.
The RHF is a five-day event, wherein for, first three days there will be an exhibition of technologies developed/ disseminated by research institutes including ICAR-IIHR, SAUs, KVKs, state development departments, NGOs and industry. Field demonstration of technologies developed by ICAR-IIHR on vegetables, fruits crops, ornamental crops, medicinal and aromatic plants etc., will be open for the visiting stakeholders especially farmers from Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Puducherry and also other states during all the five days.
The RHF was organized as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of ICAR-IIHR, which was sponsored by Directorate of Extension, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, New Delhi and co-sponsored by ICAR, various development departments such as Departments of Horticulture, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, NABARD, National Horticultural Board (NHB), Naveen Seed Growers Cooperative Society, Raipur and Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Limited.
On 15.1.2017, DG, ICAR inaugurated the Golden Jubilee Orchidarium and visited the demonstration plots, wherein ICAR-IIHR technologies were demonstrated. By inaugurating the RHF 2017, he emphasized the need for arranging link between farmers producers organizations (FPOs), processing and value addition and remunerative market. He urged that providing such link is the onus of research institutes and state development departments. He suggested that the research institutes and state development departments should establish a MoU to support FPOs with adequate processing/ value addition and market linkage. Dr PC Ray, Horticultural Commissioner, Government of Karnataka, Dr JK Jena, DDG (Fisheries), Dr Bhaskar, ADG (NRM), Dr K Narayana Gowda, Former Vice-Chancellor, UAS, Bengaluru, Directors of ICAR institutes located at Bengaluru and representatives of SAUs in Karnataka participated in the inauguration programme. More than 2500 farmers participated in the first day of the RHF 2017.
