Field Day on Dragon Fruit organized by CHES (ICAR-IIHR) Bhubaneswar

A ‘Field Day on Dragon Fruit’ was organized by the Central Horticultural Experiment (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar on 1st September, 2017 with an aim to highlight the genetic diversity, cultivation practices and utilization of dragon fruit.  The program was attended by the ICAR scientists, Faculty of Div. of Fruit Science, OUAT, state Horticulture Officers and KVK scientists from different districts, PhD students of OUAT and progressive farmers. The program was inaugurated by Dr. M. Muthukumar, Director, Horticulture, Govt. of Odisha and graced by Dr. P. C. Lenka, Ex-Dean, OUAT, Dr. D. K. Dash, Head, Div. of Fruit Science, OUAT,  Dr. Bani Singh, NHB and Dr. M. Neduncherian, Head I/c, CTCRI, Bhubaneswar. While inaugurating the program Dr. Muthukumar highlighted the prospects of dragon fruit in the state. He assured that the department will extend all possible help through schemes in promotion of dragon fruit considering its market potential. However he called upon the progressive farmers to initiate the cultivation in suitable agro-climatic zones following scientific cultivation practices. He appreciated the effort of CHES (ICAR-IIHR), Bhubaneswar for evaluating the potential of dragon fruit in the region and sensitizing the stakeholders about the crops. He requested CHES to develop package of practices for dragon fruit before it is brought under area expansion program. Dr. P. C. Lenka and Dr. D K Dash highlighted the importance of exotic minor fruit crops for development of horticulture in the eastern region. Dr. G C Acharya, Head I/c welcomed the guests and participants and highlighted the significance of crop diversification in horticulture. Dr. Kundan Kishore highlighted the cultivation practices of dragon fruit under eastern coastal region. Participates visited the block and demonstrated dragon fruit production techniques including training system and plant propagation. Participants opined that such type of information was essentially required for dragon fruit, as most of them had started its cultivation at small scale. The program was coordinated by Dr. Kundan Kishore with the support of Dr. S. Mandal, Dr. P Srinivas, Dr. G Sangeetha, Dr. Deepa Samant and technical staff.
